Facebook On a Decline? Or Is It Just Me?

Today Facebook has turned 10 years old. I can remember making the jump from Myspace to Facebook, the switch was mostly because everyone else did it and rendered Myspace useless for me. I was still fairly late into the Facebook game, and only made it there when it was open to everyone. Today I find myself using the format less and less, it has become cesspool of fan pages that been turned into marketing BS. I recently unliked nearly all of those "I like to poop" pages, but still cannot get away from the "Like for insert topic here" pages that feed off of celebrity deaths and disasters around the world. My main use for Facebook now is just to keep in touch with people who I may need something from in the future, and group chats among friends I see often who don't know how to send a group text.

Zuckerberg recently posted a blog about his reflections of Facebook past, present, and future. He says that "I always thought this was important - giving people the power to share and stay connected, empowering to build their own communities themselves". Facebook really does that for the most part, but is awfully spam filled at the moment, unless you got an eye for the spam and get like techniques that are out there.

Zuckerberg claims that Facebook still cares about his users more than his competitors do. We all know that he cares more about the dough that is falling into his pockets. We all see the annoying ads that fall under our news feeds and in the right column. Even with an ad blocker you still cannot block them all (not that some advertisement is bad, just keep it out of my feed).

Like Myspace I feel a decline, I don't have any numbers to back that up, just my lack of using it. More recently I have been on Google's social media network Google Plus and have literally no friends at all from Facebook who are on it. I feel like it may pick up some steam in the next year though, the communities on Google Plus have actually been helpful, and seem to be monitored better. I like to be able to have a discussion every once in a while without having someone spout some bad Reddit Meme.

So maybe I will just keep using Facebook as a fancy contact book, and leave the discussion to Google Plus. Only time will tell if Google Plus will rise, or if some other network will come in and be the next big thing.
