Web Video To Chromecast With VidCast

awesome gadgets

For a couple days Chromecast SKD has been open to the public. Many individual developers are already hard at coming up with new apps and tools. The latest developed tool VidCast allows its users to easily send videos from certain sites straight to your Chromecast device.

The Chromecast dongle costs only $35 and already supports tons of other services like Netlix, Pandor, YouTube, HBO Go, Songza, but that is so limited to what the have on the web.

The very basic Chromescast extension  for your Chrome browser sends one of the browsers tabs to your Chromecast connected screen, but with a less and ideal experience. This is why developer Paul Aterburn created the more intuitive VidCast. VidCast is a bookmarklet that allows its users to send video files from their browser to you Chromecast dongle with ease.

  1. Start video.
  2. Click on VidCast bookmarklet.
  3. Then a new tab is loaded.
  4. Click the play button.
  5. Bam! Watch it on your TV.

The VidCast app only has one rule, and that it needs to be encoded in MP4, WebM or OGG formatting, and as of right now if it is in any other format you will be SOL. As of right now it is only supported on the Chrome browser, but there is talks about Firefox developers making a more supported app for Chromecast.
