Martin Cooper made his first call from the cellphone to Joel Engel the head of the research department of their rival company Bell Labs. This cellphone weighed in at 2.5 pounds and had a battery life of 20 minutes. So don't complain about your smartphone battery life 7 hours is better than 20 minutes, especially on a device that has way more functionality than the brick
The first cellphone was at its very primal with very little features. The cellphone only made calls, and if you tell that to any kid in this day and age and they will think you were trippin' and call you nuts. Regardless of the first cellphones lack of any cool features that we cannot live without today, we owe it to this awesome gadget that was concocted up by cooper, and associates. Without this brick we would not have any of the smartphones we have today.
Now let us look back on the evolution of the awesome gadget the cellphone.
1983 - Motorola DynaTac 8000X ($3,995)
The first of it's kind, the first cellphone, not the most aesthetically pleasing device, but this is where it all started. Most people under twenty will probably think this is some kind of TV prop.
1993 - Motorola StarTAC ($1,000)
The first flip phone by Motorola, and if I recall correctly it is the exact one my mother had, or at least a variant of this Motorola. I cannot say that it was the best gadget I have ever used, but it was a cellphone.
The Motorola Razr was the first sleek and slim flip phone. I remember when it came out and everyone who had one thought they were so cool, and they stuck with that phone for years, and it also had a seven hour battery life.

1999 - Nokia 7110 ($475)
It was not Nokia's firs sliding phone, but it was a better variation of their original "banana" design. This device simply started out the slide out phone style.
2004 - Motorola Razr
2007 - The iPhone
However much I have a dislike for Apple product, they do start the trends. Whether it be the MP3 player or the first multi-touch phone. They come out with awesome gadgets like the iPhone, but I dislike how they add like two features to their product and change the aesthetics, call it a brand new phone. Plus they only offer one style for this gadget, and the rant can continue so I won't bore you to death.
Smarthphone Variations
Okay so Apple started the multi-touch screen trend, and other companies have followed suit. Now we have a ton of options with different OS's such as Android, Windows, and IOS.
I have no idea where the phone will go from here, but our cellphones started off as the "brick", then shrunk down to palm size then now where back to this super big thin devices which I like to call "brick 2.0's" because I find it quite silly when someone pulls out their Galaxy Note and it covers up most of their head. This wraps up our Technology evolution, happy 40th to the cellphone, and here is to many more as we watch future gadgets evolve.
