Time to mod your PS3

Now that your PS3 is a somewhat obsolete gadget and you got your new next-gen console, or just straight up left and built yourself a PC. You are left with a PS3 and some old games that you may or may not re-play.

You may ask yourself “What can i do once I hack it?" Well you can play some sweet new to you homebrew games and your backup games. Since you already have a new system, you probably don't plan on using the PS3 for online play, and if you do don't read any further. If none of this is what intend do with your old gadget then it is probably time to go check out one of my older random posts. Now for the rest of us we shall continue to advantages and disadvantages.

This method may be an older one, but it is the one I used personally, and have done it on a friends so it is still usable, plus it is super easy to do.

Advantages:

  • You get to be a pirate (Whooo!).
  • Make use of an outdated gadget.
  • Copy games onto the internal hard drive.
  • No more disks.
  • Overclocking
Disadvantages
  • No PSN (you got a new system, so I don't know if this counts)
  • Possibility to brick
Disclaimer: I will not be held liable for damage, so proceed at your own risk.

Now if this all sound like what you want let us proceed to mod your PS3

Make sure your firmware is at 3.55, 3.55 is the magic number DO NOT UPGRADE or you will not be able to do this by yourself

Current available CFW: 4.46
PSN access: YES (But don't go online with BLOPS2, you'll probably get banned)
Latest Multiman: 4.40.00
Latest Iris: 2.40
Latest Homebrew Releases: (08/21/13)
How to mod your PS3
Go here and download the files you need. Homebrew files (NOTE: Only download 3.55 if you are not on 3.55!)

  • Now that you have the files downloaded, place them all on a USB stick.
  • Create a folder called PS3. In that folder create a folder called UPDATE. Then place the files in there.
  • If you are NOT on 3.55, then rename the OFW355.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP. Plug it in to the PS3 and go to System Update.
  • Follow the options and make sure not to update over PSN.
  • Once you are on 3.55, plug the USB stick back into your comp and go to the /PS3/UPDATE folder.
    • Now DELETE the PS3UPDAT.PUP file and rename the CFW355.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and Plug it back into the PS3
  • Now we need to go into Recovery Mode.
  1. Turn off the PS3
  2. Hold The power button down and the system will turn on and turn off once again.
  3. Once the System has been shut down, re-press the button until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
  4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
  5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller into the USB and then hit the PS button
  6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Now choose the update firmware from USB drive option to install the CFW! (Note: don't worry if it looks like it's installing twice.)

Now to confirm that it's ready, so go to the Game menu and you should see two new options.

Done! You have successfully modded your PS3, but I’ll leave it up to you to find where to get your homebrew games. I hope you enjoyed this useful tutorial and helped you make use of a once awesome gadget.
