What Will Happen When Our Sun Dies

Nope it will not be exploding into a supernova as the sun just does not have enough mass. In about 5.4 billion years it will turn into a red giant, and scientists have calculated that it will become large enough to swallow the inner planets, and possibly even earth.

When the hydrogen is exhausted it will cause the sun to expand into a giant phase. This means it will double its current size in 5.4 billion years. Then it enters the red giant phase for about a billion years, while dropping a third of the mass that it has gained. Then after that it will have 120 million years of life left, but they will be eventful years. First the core of the sun will ignite in a violent helium flash, and then the sun will shrink, but gain 50 times brightness, and temperatures will drop.

It is pretty crazy to think this will be happening when we pass on, but hopefully, or not maybe someone will be witness to it assuming earth goes on that long. Who knows maybe by then we will have new technology and be inhabiting a new planet by then. We won't be around to find out, but maybe some great great great ancestor will be.
