Okay, all jokes aside, Glass is making its move to the NYPD police officers, in an
experiment to see how it can benefit police work. Google Glass has only been
out for a year in the beta stage, and still not ready for commercial sale,
people and businesses alike can sign up to try it out though. Thus helping
Google collect data to tune features and fix bugs.
The NYPD is hoping that this awesome gadget can make certain
aspects of police work better. This includes getting directions to an
emergency, keeping police up updated with instant updates, and better yet
keeping abusive cops under a watching eye. Some departments have had some
success keeping police brutality under control by placing cameras on officers,
some people think that it will be intrusive for the citizens. I personally don’t
think it will be a problem since we live under a no privacy government at the
moment, but that they fear it will expose too many un-lawful officers.
One of Google Glasses sweet apps is called NameTag, it is a
facial recognition program that does what the name implies. A policeman walking
down the street with Google Glass can pull up a file on anyone he walks by,
making it a pretty futuristic like something out of the movies. The problem is
that it will show every bit of information like, address, phone number, and
work place, which can be pretty bad in the wrong hands. Google Glass is
essentially bringing the dash cam to the cops face, and more features.
Besides some moral debate and legality, I can see Google
Glass incorporation into the police force being a positive thing. Not just
walking down the streets, but in a group affect like an S.W.A.T. team, being
networked together can help the execution of a plan go smoother. The benefit of having
a live stream going when a sketchy situation is occurring, and the video and
audio would tell the whole story.
This addition of Google Glass into a police force will defiantly be rough at first, since it is a whole new system to get use to and it will take some fine tuning and time. So I say give it a good 4 years to meet its full potential, but it will be nice to see what is going to happen with this awesome gadget being used for the ‘good’.
